Every story is different. Every person should be treated that way.

One of the greatest privileges of working in healthcare is being invited into people’s lives during moments that matter most. It is also one of the greatest responsibilities.
No two people experience serious illness the same way. Every patient brings a lifetime of experiences, relationships, beliefs, traditions, and values that shape how they view illness, caregiving, and the end of life. Those perspectives deserve our respect.
At Mountain Valley, we often talk about meeting people where they are. That means we don’t begin with assumptions. We begin with curiosity. We listen before we lead. We take the time to understand what matters most to each individual and family, because the care we provide should reflect their goals—not ours.
For some families, faith is at the center of every decision. Others may have cultural traditions that are deeply important as they approach the end of life. Some people want large gatherings of family and friends. Others prefer quiet moments with just a few loved ones nearby. There isn’t one “right” way to experience this journey. There is only the way that feels right for that individual.
That approach is rooted in what healthcare professionals often call cultural humility. To us, it simply means recognizing that every person has a unique story. It means approaching each patient and family with respect, openness, and a willingness to learn rather than assuming we already know what they need.
When we take that approach, something important happens. Patients feel seen. Families feel heard. Trust begins to grow. And together, we can create an experience that reflects what is most meaningful to them.
In the video below, Mountain Valley Chaplain Brian Chilton shares his perspective on why cultural humility is such an important part of compassionate care—and why meeting people where they are is one of the greatest gifts we can offer.
At Mountain Valley, we believe exceptional care begins with listening. It continues with compassion. And it is shaped by honoring each person’s unique beliefs, traditions, and wishes. While every journey is different, every person deserves to feel respected, understood, and cared for in a way that reflects who they are.
That’s what it means to meet people where they are. And that’s the kind of care we believe everyone deserves.
