Our History


Mountain Valley team members, volunteers, local officials, and community members gathered to celebrate the opening of our Yadkinville office on Hawthorne Drive. This newly renovated space will allow us to continue to serve our mission, ensuring that compassionate end-of-life care is accessible and readily available to the residents of Yadkin County. Thanks to Yadkin Chamber, Yadkin County Commissioners, and the Yadkin County Economic Development Council for their support.

Mountain Valley celebrated 15 years of dedicated care at the Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Since it’s inception in 2009, Tracey Dobson, Mountain Valley’s president and CEO, shared, “We are immensely proud of the services and support we have been able to provide over the past 15 years. Our dedicated team of doctors, nurses, CNAs, social workers, chaplains, volunteers, and other professionals have exemplified excellence in hospice care, bringing comfort and understanding to those in need.” Attendees enjoyed refreshments and guided tours.

Mountain Valley introduces Love’s PEAK (Providing Empathy and Assurance for Kids), a program dedicated to pediatric hospice and palliative care. The program also provides grief support through an annual grief camp for children who could benefit from grief counseling after the loss of a family member or loved one. “When we learn of a child with a serious illness, our hearts break right along with the child’s family and community, said Tracey Dobson, President and CEO of Mountain Valley. “It is in these difficult times when we bring comprehensive care and support with our specially trained team. There is deep sadness but also hope and beauty found in caring for children, and we honor that sacred place. In everything we do at Mountain Valley and particularly when it comes to children, we are servants to the patient and also the family and surrounding community.”

Mountain Valley celebrates new corporate office in Dobson, NC. This building will host the new corporate headquarters for Mountain Valley along with Northern Family Medicine – Dobson. This long-term investment in our community represents our continued commitment to providing the best experience for every patient, every family, every time. Many supporters joined for the ribbon cutting and tours of the new office.

Mountain Valley unveiled a new brand identity with a new logo that graphically portrays the 2-state market area of North Carolina and Virginia region we serve and reflects our 40-year legacy of caring with bold new colors and updated typeface. Our goal was to have a new identity for Mountain Valley reflecting the personal nature of our work and the passion our team brings to each day and each interaction with a patient or family member. “Our mission is to honor the lives and experiences of the individuals we serve and make every moment matter. Our brand now reflects our commitment to create the best experience for those facing serious illness. Every patient. Every family. Every time.” said Jan Bullard, senior vice president of marketing and public relations.

To expand our Serious Illness services to more patients, Mountain Valley opened the second of our Serious Illness Specialists offices in King, NC. This allows us to serve both Stokes and surrounding counties.

In continuing our mission to create the best experience for those facing serious illness in April of 2021, Mountain Valley opened the first of our two Serious Illness Specialists offices. These locations are focused on providing patients with relief from disease-related symptoms and stress. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both patients and their families.

Tracey joined the agency in 2018 and held concurrently the executive leadership positions of Chief Clinical Operations Officer and Director of Quality, Education & Compliance before her promotion to her current role. Prior to coming to Mountain Valley, Tracey served as Chief Operating Officer of Ridge Care, Inc. Tracey’s career spans over 30 years in the areas of hospice, home care, pediatrics, and geriatrics, and includes more than 20 years of healthcare operations and administration experience. In order to serve more patrons, we opened our second Re-Sale Shoppe at 665 S Main St #105 in Sparta, NC.

On this day, we opened our second hospice care center. Located in Yadkinville, NC, this 10,000 sq. ft. facility accommodates patients in and around Yadkin County.

Opening our Martinsville office not only allows us to “Create the best experience for those facing serious illness…Every Patient, Every Family, Every Time.”

We opened our first Re-Sale Shoppe at 461 N South Street in Mount Airy, NC. At the Re-Sale Shoppe, people can donate their gently used household items for us to sell. The proceeds from each sale goes toward funding uninsured/underinsured patient care.

Built in 2009, The Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home is our first hospice care center. Located in Dobson, NC and spanning 22,000 sq-ft., our Woltz Hospice Home is equipped to accommodate patients in Surry and surrounding counties with its 20 patient suites.

Hospice of Surry and Yadkin County merged with Northern Hospice of Surry County. In 2006, we renamed Hospice of Surry and Yadkin county to D.B.A. Mountain Valley Hospice.
Hospice of Surry County, Northern Hospice, and Hospice of Surry/Yadkin County merge to become Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care.
Opening the Galax office allowed us to expand into our neighboring state of Virginia.

Mountain Valley Hospice was formed in the basement of First Presbyterian Church in downtown Mount Airy by Mrs. Joan Woltz and Mary Alice Lewis along with The Altrusa Club under the name “Hospice of Surry County.”
